RESEARCH GROUP

  • Latin American History of Education Laboratory (LHELA)
Coordination: Fernando César Ferreira Gouvêa and Maria Angélica da Gama Cabral Coutinho.

The Latin American History of Education Laboratory aims to expand the field of study of the History of Education to encompass the Latin American space and facilitate partnerships with different institutions and actors in the consolidation of a project aimed at bringing together “neighbors” who are so close yet so “distant” when it comes to constructing an identity project for a historical, geographical, political, social, and educational bloc. Additionally, the laboratory will host comparative studies on teacher training, research institutions, and teaching between Brazil and other Latin American countries.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

  • History of School Institutions in Baixada Fluminense
    Period: (2022 – Current)

The primary goal of this project is to construct a historiography of school institutions in Baixada Fluminense from a perspective followed by many researchers, guided by the theoretical contributions of the History of Education. The understanding of this historiographical operation lies in the idea that it is necessary to view Local History of education as an investigative possibility that goes beyond the interest of those who reside in Baixada Fluminense. Therefore, the project aims to reflect on a distinct framework: Local History is not merely a mouth where the national history of education flows undisturbed and ready to be reproduced, on a smaller scale, in villages and municipalities. Our understanding, as argued by Borges, Dias, and Pinheiro (2021, p. 53), is that “… the analysis of historiography should demonstrate the capacity for epistemological innovation.” In this sense, we initially recognize the potential of the proposed research in three ways: first, researching school institutions in Baixada Fluminense as a meeting point between the history of the region and the process of creating school units, as well as the history of teachers who gave life to these institutions; secondly, the possibility of comparing statements in the History of Education on a national scale with the reality of Baixada Fluminense in similar time frames; and finally, the hypothesis that the results of such studies could be appropriated by schools in relation to the use of Local History. It is important to note that, generally, textbooks tend to focus on scales of analysis that do not cover the regional level (COSTA, 2019). In this case, we view the regional “… not only as a circumscribed geographic territory but as a socially constructed space…” (DIAS, 2019). Therefore, within the Postgraduate Program in Education, Contemporary Contexts, and Popular Demands (PPGEduc) at the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, which is present in two municipalities in Baixada, there is a need for research focused on the archaeology of the History of School Institutions in Baixada Fluminense.
General Objective: To construct the historiography of school institutions in Baixada Fluminense from a perspective followed by many researchers, guided by the theoretical contributions of the History of Education. Specific Objectives: First, research school institutions in Baixada Fluminense as a space where the history of the region intersects with the process of creating school units and the history of teachers who brought these institutions to life; secondly, the possibility of comparing statements in the History of Education on a national scale with the reality of Baixada Fluminense in similar time frames; and finally, the hypothesis that the results of such studies could be appropriated by schools in the use of Local History.
