RESEARCH GROUP
- Study and Research Group on Environmental Education, Diversity, and Sustainability (GEPEADS)
Coordination: Ana Maria Dantas Soares and Mauro Guimarães
GEPEADS seeks to deepen understanding of environment-society relationships, investigate perceptions of Environmental Education in various contexts (school-based or otherwise), analyze the implementation of public policies aimed at socio-environmental sustainability, and serve as an institutional reference space. The group connects research and outreach activities, aiming to rethink professional training offered by the university and contribute to reflections on pedagogical practices in the context of basic education and environmental educator training. GEPEADS actively participates in events, producing work stemming from its discussions and actions. Since 2008, GEPEADS has expanded its work at the Multidisciplinary Institute – UFRRJ Campus in Nova Iguaçu, coordinated by Prof. Mauro Guimarães. The group also explores key intersections, such as agroecology, and fosters partnerships with other research groups.

RESEARCH PROJECTS
- Other Epistemologies in the Training Process in Environmental Education
Period: (2014 – Present)
GEPEADS aims to understand training processes in Environmental Education that reconnect with nature through alternative epistemologies (indigenous knowledge and others) as a means to educate environmentally, fostering a new worldview and differentiated pedagogical praxis. The project promotes and monitors immersive pedagogical experiences for reflective critical analysis, providing theoretical-methodological guidelines for Environmental Education training processes from a critical perspective, termed “Pedagogical Co-Living.” Initial efforts focused on a group of environmental educators in training, members of three research groups: GEPEADS/UFRRJ; the Geography and Traditional Peoples Study Group (GEOPOVOS)/UFRRJ; and the Environmental Education Studies from the South Group (GEASur)/UNIRIO. Pedagogical co-living explored the knowledge of three indigenous ethnicities: the Guarani (Rio de Janeiro), the Krahô (Tocantins), and the Quechua (Bolivia). Currently, other knowledge systems are being studied, including those of Quilombola communities, alternative communities connected to Santo Daime doctrines and Eastern philosophies, agroecology and permaculture movements, and experiences on the Camino de Santiago. These significant “Pedagogical Co-Living” experiences aim to provide elements for Environmental Education training processes with the radical approach required in times of civilizational crisis.
