Extension of Deadline for Defense
Extensions in the PPGEDUC program comply with Deliberation No. 631/2023 of UFRRJ, which establishes the guidelines for extension requests within stricto sensu graduate programs.
Extension of the Deadline for Program Completion
Master’s Degree: The maximum time frame for completing a Master’s degree is 24 months, with the possibility of an extension for up to 6 months, at the discretion of the PPGEDUC Academic Committee. In exceptional cases, an extension may be granted with the approval of the Office of Research and Graduate Studies (PROPPG). For interinstitutional programs, the committee may extend the maximum defense deadline to 36 months. Defenses beyond 36 months may also be authorized upon consultation with the Office of Research and Graduate Studies.
Doctoral Degree: The maximum duration for completing a Doctorate is 48 months. Extensions may be granted at the discretion of the PPGEDUC Academic Committee, taking into account the specific requirements of different fields of knowledge.
Extension of Deadlines for Submission of Final Work
After the defense, students have up to 60 days to submit the final digital version of their dissertation or thesis to the program’s administrative office, incorporating the revisions requested by the examining committee. If the 60-day deadline is exceeded, but the final document is submitted within 180 days of the defense, the Academic Committee may establish specific guidelines for validating the defense and authorizing the issuance of a transcript, completion certificate, and diploma by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies. If the 180-day deadline is surpassed, the degree will not be conferred unless there are duly substantiated and verified impediments. Any additional extensions must be reviewed by the Academic Committee and reported to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies.
Additional Considerations
- Exceptional cases will be evaluated by the Academic Committee, with the possibility of referral to the Research and Graduate Studies Board and the Office of Research and Graduate Studies.
- Enrollment suspension generally does not alter the total duration of the program. However, there are exceptions: 1) Maternity/Adoption Leave: In cases of childbirth or adoption, the student’s program completion deadline is extended for up to 120 days, in accordance with Law No. 13,536/2017 and 2) Serious Illness: If an enrollment suspension is granted due to a serious medical condition, the student’s program duration will be extended for the same length of time as the suspension period.
- It is essential that any extension request be formally submitted to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, following the specific procedures established by each program. The regulations aim to ensure that students have adequate time to complete their studies, considering unforeseen circumstances and situations that may require additional time for research and thesis/dissertation completion.
Extension Request Procedure
Extension requests must be formally submitted by the student, with the endorsement of their advisor, and evaluated by the Academic Committee. The committee is responsible for approving requests for extensions related to dissertation or thesis defenses and other academic activities. The request must include justifications and supporting documentation, as applicable.
