The Decolonial Studies Group (GED) brings together researchers to discuss the impacts of coloniality on education and to explore ways to understand and develop mechanisms for resistance and transformation. The group meets biweekly at the Institute of Education (UFRRJ/Campus Seropédica) to research, debate, and develop practices that challenge the persistence of elitist and non-inclusive pedagogies. The group’s work is presented at national and international conferences, academic seminars, and published in journals and organized books.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

  • The Challenges of Promoting Anti-Racist Education at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro: Training, Inclusion, and Teaching from a Decolonial Perspective
    Period: (2020 – Present)

This project aims to analyze the challenges of promoting anti-racist education at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), focusing on the educational process of students in teacher training programs at the Seropédica Campus. It also examines the university’s initiatives related to inclusion, access, and retention of these students, as well as the teaching methods employed.

From a decolonial pedagogy perspective, the project seeks to envision potential pathways for comprehensive, autonomous, and civic education that aims at equitable opportunities. Specifically, the project intends to: Map internal actions within teacher training programs aimed at understanding and combating racism and structural racialization; Document experiences of professors and students related to perceptions and instances of racism and structural racialization;Develop key concepts for the discussion of anti-racist education from a decolonial perspective, such as racism, racialization, decolonial education, prejudice, Eurocentrism, liberating education, and university reform; Analyze legal documents within the university aimed at addressing structural racism and racialization; Highlight the formative experiences provided to teacher trainees during the project and their potential connections with the perspectives of involved university faculty; Examine the challenges and potential contributions of anti-racist education in fostering critical and investigative thinking integral to pedagogical practice; Identify positive and negative aspects, as well as challenges, in teacher training practices related to everyday school life, based on university professors’ perspectives.
