RESEARCH PROJECTS

  • The Bars Could Not Prevent Education: The History of Prison School Institutions in Rio de Janeiro 1967-1995
    Period: (2020 – Present)

The study presented here is situated in the field of the History of Education, particularly in the research line of School Institutions, in its interface with Political History. The focus will be on the history of schools within prison institutions in Rio de Janeiro, from their emergence in the 1960s to the final decade of the millennium, during the Leonel Brizola/Nilo Batista government, which was primarily characterized by efforts to ensure access to education for all populations. Although a relatively recent institution, it plays an important role in Rio de Janeiro, a city that has historically served as the capital of the Portuguese colony, the Empire, and the Republic, particularly shaped by the establishment of the Brazilian State. To study the temporal span covered, the research aims to examine the history of prison school institutions, from the creation of the first public prisons during the Portuguese colonization period to the emergence of schools within penitentiary institutions, with a particular focus on the institutions in Rio de Janeiro. The sources for this research will include archival documents from the prison system institutions and the education department, along with existing literature, primarily in the legal field. Oral History will be used to gather memories from individuals involved in these schools, interviewing teachers who have worked or continue to work within these institutions, as well as legal documents related to the topic, such as decrees, codes, laws, ordinances, and school regulations.

    Period: (2017 – Present)

This research project seeks to investigate the teacher training process for History educators working in the second segment of Elementary Education and High School, stages of Basic Education within the Brazilian education system. The focus is on undergraduate History programs offered by state and federal public institutions in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The state holds a prominent position in the national scenario, especially in the cultural and educational fields, and this investigation aims to contribute to understanding the issues affecting these teaching professionals. The study involves understanding the composition of History undergraduate programs, their origins, curriculum design, and particularly the emphasis on pedagogical courses. Analyzing the syllabi of pedagogical courses and assessing changes in these documents over time will be crucial for understanding the training process of teachers and the importance of the program for the institution. The research will identify and analyze the courses that constitute History undergraduate programs, academic models, and practical models in the conception of Nóvoa, the balance between these courses in the construction of the programs, and how they are implemented.
