RESEARCH GROUP

  • Gender, Education, and Sexualities Studies Laboratory – LEGESEX
Coordinator: Jonas Alves da Silva Junior.

LEGESEX (Gender, Education, and Sexualities Studies Laboratory – CNPq/UFRRJ) has been in operation since 2018, under the coordination of Prof. Jonas Alves da Silva Junior. In the first year, we held weekly meetings, and from 2019 onwards, we began meeting biweekly, always on the Nova Iguaçu campus. The idea of forming this group – quite diverse, with members ranging from high school students to PhDs in Education, as well as professionals with various academic backgrounds – arose from the recognition that in different social territories, the cultural reproduction of gender models often highlights the difficulty of individuals in discussing issues related to masculinity/femininity and its diversity within the social grammar. The complexity of human sexuality, as well as the legitimization of gender relations, were summarily rejected in schools, leading to discrimination and marginalization of individuals who do not fit the socially valued cis-heteronormative prototypes. Therefore, in this group, gender and sexuality in education are discussed and problematized, aiming to deconstruct prejudices, reframe sexist and LGBTphobic representations, and, through research and extension activities, enable practices based on human rights and democratic principles.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

  • Studies on Education and the Construction of Masculinities in Socio-Educational Institutions
    Period: (2018 – Present)

This project aims to discuss the impact of constructing masculinities among adolescents in a socio-educational institution in Rio de Janeiro. The research is based on a theoretical framework informed by post-structuralist authors in Gender and Cultural Studies. The methodology follows a qualitative exploratory-descriptive approach, conducted in a male temporary socio-educational facility at Novo DEGASE (Department of Socio-Educational Actions). The participants include socio-educators from psychosocial, security, and educational areas. This work aims to reflect on the conditions that can establish and maintain sexist and homo/transphobic practices in environments where the educational proposal should foster social education based on the basic principles of Human Rights.

Keywords: Construction of Masculinities; Youth; Human Rights Education; Socio-Education.

  • Gender, Sexualities, and Masculinities in Socio-Educational Institutions
    Period: (2017 – 2018)

This project falls within the thematic area of Education and Human Rights, aiming to systematize and analyze public policies that reflect on gender and sexuality with adolescents in socio-educational measures. The primary goal is to understand how the exercise of sexuality is configured by individuals deprived of their liberty, drawing on post-structuralist authors from Gender and Cultural Studies. The methodological approach is a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive field study, conducted in two male detention units of Novo DEGASE (RJ). Data collection will involve semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. The participants will include socio-educators from security, psychosocial, and educational sectors, as well as adolescents undergoing socio-educational measures. This work seeks to reflect on the conditions that can establish and maintain sexist and homo/transphobic practices in environments where the educational proposal should foster social education in accordance with Human Rights principles.

Keywords: Gender; Sexualities; Masculinities; Socio-Education.

  • Teaching Practices in Diversity
    Period: (2014 – 2017)

The complexity of the relationship between school and culture(s) and the different ways teachers position themselves in relation to it has been a focus of our interest over the past years. The goal is to direct our focus, reflection, and research to the concrete ways in which teachers attempt to work with this relationship in the daily school environment. Many proposals and models have aimed to offer elements for the development of multicultural education, emphasizing philosophical, ideological, and political-social aspects of multiculturalism, combating racism and discrimination, and respecting and valuing cultural diversity. However, issues related to pedagogical practice in classrooms and the implications of multiculturalism for teaching have been underexplored. Therefore, the courses I teach – Didactics and Body and Education – will be crucial to the execution of the extension and research project, as in these classes, the historical creation process of didactics, as well as multicultural teaching practices, will be presented. The planned activities in the classroom will be directly used in the research and extension project. As the methodology employed will be action research, the PIBID program plays a strategic role in the project’s execution, as the research/extension will be conducted in a public Early Childhood Education school located in the municipality of Queimados. The project will involve the course instructor (myself), UFRRJ students, teachers from the partner school, and its management team. The focus is on the relationship between pedagogical practice and multiculturalism. The project is structured to integrate teaching activities (Didactics and Body and Education courses) with extension activities, representing an intersection of the three pillars of Higher Education (teaching/research/extension) in a unified approach.

Keywords: Diversity, Didactics, Human Rights Education.
