RESEARCH GROUP

  • Study and Research Group on Higher Education and Education Research – ESPE
Coordination: Aline de Carvalho Moura and Andreia Gomes da Cruz

The Study and Research Group on Higher Education and Education Research – ESPE focuses on educational research, examining the relationship between knowledge production in education and higher education within a neoliberal context. The group’s recurring research questions revolve around two main axes: concerns in the field of education and the political-institutional issues that influence and shape educational policies in Brazil. The research group collaborates with other education researchers, maintaining a multi-institutional structure and engaging in dialogue with other research groups.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

  • Commodification of Higher Education in Brazil – The Impacts of Privatization on Teacher Education
    Period: (2020 – Present)

This research project aims to understand the expansionist process of private higher education institutions in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, located in the Baixada Fluminense region. The proposal is an initiative of the Study and Research Group on Higher Education and Education Research – ESPE/IM/UFRRJ, in collaboration with the Center for Studies and Research on Higher Education at the Federal Fluminense University – NEPES/UFF, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Maria de Fátima Costa de Paula. It seeks to develop new analyses regarding the privatization process in higher education and its effects on teacher education in Nova Iguaçu.

The project addresses aspects of Brazilian educational policies related to the expansion and democratization of higher education. It also considers the influence of neoliberal policies promoted by international organizations such as the World Bank and the World Trade Organization. Document analysis will include research and statistics retrieved from official documents and websites such as those of the Ministry of Education, the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (INEP), private higher education institutions (HEIs), the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), and the Municipal Government of Nova Iguaçu.

  • Inclusion Policies and Dropout Rates in Private Higher Education: A Case Study at Vilar dos Teles Campus
    Period: (2017 – 2018)

This study aimed to discuss issues related to public policies for inclusion and retention in Brazilian higher education. The research focused on analyzing whether the establishment of the Vilar dos Teles Campus, part of Universidade Estácio de Sá (a private HEI) located in the periphery of Rio de Janeiro (São João de Meriti), contributed to the inclusion of underprivileged groups (Black and poor students) in higher education or merely reproduced the stratification already present in public HEIs.

One of the main concerns raised in this discussion involves the methods used by institutions to select candidates for financial aid or retention scholarships, often based solely on students’ socioeconomic data. General Objectives: Gather data on student dropout cases at the Vilar dos Teles Campus in the Baixada Fluminense region. Analyze the reasons for dropout to develop strategies for reducing it. Design strategies to improve student retention in higher education. Specific Objectives: Identify the courses with the highest dropout rates. Interview students and coordinators to understand the factors contributing to dropout. Administer questionnaires to faculty and students to create a database with pertinent information derived from case study findings.
