RESEARCH PROJECTS
- National Context and the Fight Against Racism in Brazil
2018 – Present
Coordinator: Amauri Mendes Pereira
Description: This research aims to explore, encourage, and give visibility to discussions about the current state of the fight against racism and racial issues in Brazil. These discussions are essential for broadening and strengthening social awareness regarding the role of racial inequalities in perpetuating racism in Brazil and the barriers that prejudice, discrimination, and racial inequalities pose to the full realization of democracy, citizenship, and social justice.
- Education with Science and Awareness: Cartographies and Characterizations of the Implementation of Laws 10.639/03 and 11.645/08
2017 – Present
Coordinator: Amauri Mendes Pereira
Description: How have our students been trained (or not) to understand racial issues in Brazil? This research investigates the previous experiences of UFRRJ students with topics related to African history, Afro-Brazilian culture, and Indigenous culture, as well as the reasons for possible similarities and differences between these experiences. There is a recurring perception that undergraduate students and even educators in public basic education systems react with resistance or indifference, or feel inadequately or poorly trained on these topics. Our data and analyses will contribute to the efforts of researchers at the national level in assessing and improving the effective implementation of Articles 26-A and 79-B of the LDBEN. Additionally, this study will produce up-to-date and directly relevant data on the scope and complexity of implementing Laws 10.639/03 and 11.645/08, fostering new reflections on racial issues in personal lives, in the educational sphere, and within universities.

Description: How have our students been trained (or not) to understand, discuss, and act upon racial issues in the school environment and in their relationships within Brazilian society? This research examines the experiences of UFRRJ students with African History and Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous History and Culture, as well as how these topics are usually perceived and addressed in schools and throughout the educational system hierarchy. It questions the similarities and differences in experiences and contexts. There is a recurring perception that undergraduate students, as well as educators and administrators in public basic education, react with resistance or indifference, or feel inadequately trained on these topics. The study aims to generate current and directly applicable data for students, educators, and administrators regarding the scope and complexity of implementing Laws 10.639/03 and 11.645/08, fostering new reflections on racial issues in their personal and social lives, academic training, and in the educational environments where most students will pursue their professional careers.
