  • Study and Research Group on Psychosocial Aspects of the Body (GEPAC)
Coordination: Fabiane Frota da Rocha Morgado.

The Study and Research Group on Psychosocial Aspects of the Body (GEPAC) is affiliated with the Postgraduate Program in Education, Contemporary Contexts, and Popular Demands (PPGEDUC), the Institute of Education (IE), and the Department of Physical Education and Sports (DEFD) at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). It is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Fabiane Frota da Rocha Morgado and mainly involves students from the PPGEDUC and the Undergraduate Physical Education Program at UFRRJ. GEPAC also includes teachers from both public and private schools in Seropédica and the Rio de Janeiro State region, as well as researchers and scholars from other educational institutions across the country. Contemporary topics and educational practices in the field of Education, particularly Physical Education, are the focus of studies in GEPAC, with an emphasis on: psychosocial aspects of human movement, body image and corporeality, diversity, social representations, psychometrics, and school physical education.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

  • Interfaces between School Physical Education, Body Image, and the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC).
    Period: (2022 – Present)

Research Line: Body Image. The National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) is the current guiding document for national education. Among the content addressed in this document, Physical Education stands out as a curricular component aimed at mobilizing competencies and knowledge through the moving body. Linked to the language area, the approach of Physical Education raises important issues to be addressed, with body image being the central focus of this investigation. This project aims to understand Physical Education teachers’ perceptions of the interfaces between Physical Education and body image, as perceived through the BNCC. It is a qualitative, cross-sectional, descriptive research conducted through focus groups, and data analysis will be performed using the semantic categorical content analysis method proposed by Laurence Bardin. It is expected that this investigation will provide theoretical and methodological support for the critical and assertive action of Physical Education teachers in addressing body image content present in the BNCC. It is also hoped that this research will contribute to the promotion of future public policies aligned with pedagogical practices that consider the inclusion of body image-related content in Basic Education.

  • Social Representations of the Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Basic Education: From the Perspective of Teachers, Students, and Caregivers.
    Period: (2021 – Present)

Research Line: Social Representations. Given that even the most challenging moments faced by Brazilian education can foster growth and provoke changes in customs, this research aims to identify and analyze the social representations of members of the school community (teachers, managers, students, and their families) from a federal public school in Rio de Janeiro regarding teaching (remote and in-person) during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts on Basic Education. This study will focus on the Early Years of Elementary School, as this segment serves children of a particular age group with unique characteristics that require special attention. The research, of a qualitative nature, will be guided by the Theory of Social Representations, developed by Serge Moscovici, in its processual approach, due to its ability to condense information, values, beliefs, and symbols, its role in guiding practices, and the clues it offers for changing entrenched practices. Teachers, managers, students from the Early Years of Elementary School, and their families from Colégio Pedro II will participate in this investigation. The main data collection strategy will be focus groups, which enable extensive discussions among multiple participants to capture in-depth insights on a given topic. The data will be analyzed using the content analysis approach proposed by Laurence Bardin. The goal is to contribute to the debate on education in exceptional times, discussing and proposing new ways of organizing teaching in the Early Years of Elementary School that address the needs of the new educational scenarios.

Research Group: GEPAC (Study and Research Group on Psychosocial Aspects of the Body).

Keywords: Social Representations, Basic Education, COVID-19.

  • Cross-Cultural Adaptation, Validation, and Reliability of Body Image Assessment Scales for School Adolescents with Visual Impairments in Brazil.
    Period: (2019 – Present)

Research Line: Body Image. Body image is a concept that has gained prominence in recent decades. Many researchers have dedicated efforts to studying it. In this sense, scholars have worked on the development, validation, and/or cross-cultural adaptation of tools to assess body image in various populations, including people with visual impairments. The aim of this research is to perform the cross-cultural adaptation and assess the reliability of the Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS), Functionality Appreciation Scale (FAS), and Self-Acceptance Scale – Early Blindness (SAS-EB) for Brazilian adolescents with visual impairments. The cross-cultural adaptation process will follow the steps outlined by Beaton et al. (2002), including translation, synthesis meeting, back-translation, expert committee, and pre-testing. Participants will include adolescents with visual impairments, aged 10 to 19 years (mean 17.08, SD = 1.97), including those with low vision and blindness. Reliability will be assessed using internal consistency, measured with Cronbach’s alpha. It is expected that the validated instruments for the Brazilian context will be useful in supporting research focused on developing pedagogical proposals that contribute to the integrated and positive development of body image in students with visual impairments.
