OBJECTIVES: Allow the student to know and apply analytical techniques for the
isolation and purification of natural and synthetic substances.
SUMMARY:
1. Chromatographic Methods (14 hours).
2. Extraction, Separation and Purification Methods (16 hours)
3. Isolation and Purification of Organic Substances.
4. Reactions to characterize functional groups (16 hours)
PROGRAM CONTENT:
01. Chromatographic Methods
Chromatography (introduction): Mechanisms of adsorption, partition, ion exchange and exclusion.
Open column chromatography, analytical and preparative thin layer, paper. Types and Recovery
of adsorbents.
02. Introduction to gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography and introduction to
counter current chromatography.
03. Extraction, Separation and Purification methods applied to organic substances.
Liquid-liquid extraction, Soxhlet extraction, acid-base extraction. Crystallization. Sublimation.
04. Chemical Characterization: Functional Groups and Classes of Natural Products
05. Structural modifications to organic substances.
Reactions: Oxidation, reduction, methylation, demethylation, acetylation, hydrolysis, ketal formation, esterification
