History

The Postgraduate Program in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering (PGEAAmb) at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) was recommended by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) on December 11, 2013, and began its activities on January 1, 2014. The Program, classified in the CAPES Agricultural Sciences I assessment area, only offers an academic master’s degree. At the time of its recommendation for opening, the Program received a score of 3 from CAPES, reaching a score of 4 in its first Quadrennial Assessment by CAPES. In its second Quadrennial Assessment (2017-2021), PGEAAmb maintained a score of 4, demonstrating that the Program is consolidated. In the 2022-2025 Quadrennial, PGEAAmb achieved important goals such as holding its 50th master’s degree defense, admitting and defending its first foreign students, and approving high-impact projects.

In 2024, upon completing 10 years of existence, the Program approved the creation of the Doctorate course, demonstrating its evolution and considerations as one of the main Postgraduate courses in the area of Agricultural Sciences in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The PGEAAmb is expected to have the first entrants in the doctorate classes starting in August 2025.

The creation of the PGEAAmb was in line with the institutional development plan of UFRRJ, which aims, among other aspects, to expand and diversify teaching activities at the undergraduate, graduate, extension and basic education levels by offering new courses and different teaching modalities. The implementation of the Postgraduate Program in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering provided positive improvements to the undergraduate courses in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering of the Engineering Department of UFRRJ, in addition to contributing to the constant improvement of all the professors involved, generating positive effects on the technical quality of the training of the undergraduates of these courses and in the others where these professors work. In this way, it is reflected in the contribution to excellence in research, teaching and extension, thus assisting the development of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, and consequently in regional development.
