Special and International Students

The PPGD is open to master’s and doctoral students from other Graduate Programs, whether from UFRRJ or other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), who wish to take specific courses. This opportunity serves as a way to exchange experiences and backgrounds, which enhances not only the visiting student’s education but, fundamentally, that of the regular students at PPGD/UFRRJ. External students may take up to two courses. As this is an exceptional modality, the PPGD will accept master’s and doctoral students from Graduate Programs in the field of Law, as well as related fields. Interested applicants may directly contact the faculty members responsible for the courses, who will evaluate the possibility of admitting external students to then formalize enrollment in the course with the Program Coordination; alternatively, applicants may respond to the Public Calls issued by the Coordination for the admission of special students.

In accordance with the General Regulations, special and external students are registered in the SIGAA platform as special students. The system will generate an enrollment/registration number, which must be provided to the student along with their level and initial year/semester, so they can create a username and password to access the Student Portal at the following link:https://sigaa.ufrrj.br/sigaa/public/cadastro/discente.jsf

Special students do not enroll online. The program coordination/secretariat processes course enrollment through the Matrículas – Matricular Aluno Especial (Enrollment – Enroll Special Student) tab. Special students can issue their academic transcripts on the Student Portal.

Undergraduate students from UFRRJ or other HEIs cannot be registered as special students in a Graduate Program within UFRRJ’s SIGAA system.

The PPGD is also open to receiving international students. Admission may occur through dedicated public notices issued for this purpose, in which case the undergraduate degree does not need to be officially recognized, due to an existing agreement between UFRRJ and the foreign Higher Education Institution. However, if the international applicant decides to compete for one of the regular vacancies in the standard student selection process intended for residents of Brasil, their undergraduate Law degree must be revalidated in Brazil, documents must be apostilled/legalized and translated into Portuguese, and the applicant must hold permanent residency in Brazil. For more information regarding the revalidation of undergraduate degrees and the recognition of foreign master’s and doctoral degrees, please visit:https://carolinabori.mec.gov.br/

In the case of international applicants not residing in Brazil, it will be necessary to obtain information regarding Brazilian legislation and secure the specific visa, as entry for foreign nationals depends on a visa that must be obtained from the Brazilian consular service in their country of origin. UFRRJ does not accept non-resident international students who do not obtain a student visa and health insurance. The visa required for those wishing to study in Brazil is the temporary student visa, provided for by the Migration Law (Law No. 13,445/2017). Upon passing the selection process, the international student must arrange registration for a Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas (CPF — Individual Taxpayer Registry) with the Receita Federal (Federal Revenue Service), as this document must mandatorily appear on the master’s or doctoral diploma. The formalization of enrollment is conditional upon presenting a copy of the student visa and international health insurance. The Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies (PROP) is not responsible for the expenses of international students in the country (housing, food, and other costs). The admission of international students holding a temporary student visa into the program is permitted exclusively under the condition of fellowship/scholarship holders.
