INFRASCTRUCTURE

The Postgraduate Course in Veterinary Sciences is located within the Department of Animal Parasitology, as a component of the Veterinary Institute. It is physically separated from the central campus of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (acronym UFRRJ in Portuguese). The campus belongs to the municipality of Seropédica, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (22º 49’S; 43º 42’W, elevation 30m, climate subtropical).

 

Department of Animal Parasitology Facilities

The department is located in the rearmost building, forming an annex to the principal building  of the Animal Health Project PSA/EMBRAPA.

On the first floor contains the administrative offices, the main auditory (used for theoretical classes, thesis’s defenses and conferences), theoretical and practical class rooms, a multi-user laboratory for molecular biology applied to veterinary medicine and parasitological diagnostics, a laboratory for photography and photomicrography, a laboratory for parasite preparation and mounting for practical classes, a kitchen area a storeroom and restrooms. The second floor is occupied by the offices of lecturers from the Department of Animal Parasitology. Some other teacher’s offices are locatd in a sparate building another building that is annexed to the Department, where is also located the laboratory of ixodology, the general laboratory for experimental techniques on parasite control, and dedicated dog and cat kennels.

The Animal Health Project’s main building has other facilities associated with researchers/teachers of the Postgraduate Course that aslo belong to The Department of Animal Parasitology as well as to the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Immunology (an associated department). The main laboratories are for microbiological diagnosis, pathologic anatomy and toxic plants, and for diagnosis of coccidias.

The remaining researchers/teachers accredited to the Course belong to the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery and the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health both part of  the Ins Veterinary Institute, as well as the Department of Animal Biology from the Institute of Biology all belonging to the UFRRJ.

Annex Hugo Edson Barbosa de Rezende (Biological Complex)

This complex of buildings is physically separated from the Department of Animal Parasitology, and is located within the main campus of the UFRRJ. Facilities include laboratories of  microbial control of arthropods, ixodology, helminthology, biology of insects of  medical and veterinary importance, of hemoparasites as well as a  kitchen and restrooms.

 

Breeding and Maintenance Facility for Experimental Animals

                A specialized area for animal breeding and maintenance is integrated with the complex and has capacity to hold different types of animals. It has stables for large animals (with eight stalls), for cattle (with 10 stalls) and for small animals (with 24 stalls), a piggery, two rabbitaries (of 34 cage capacity), a dog kennel (with 10 boxes) and an isolation area for small and mid-sized animals (with six stalls). Additionally, there is a special sector for feed preparation.

The facility also includes laboratories of hemoparasites, biology of dipterans, dipteran-borne pathogens, support and reception for parasitological material, a warehouse, one dissection room, a kitchen and restrooms; a grass planting area and paddocks for breeding and maintenance of experimental and working animals.
