\"\"<\/a>GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GEOGRAPHY [PPGGEO-UFRRJ] \u2013 MASTERS\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

HISTORICAL-GEOGRAPHICAL CONTEXT AND INSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGES<\/strong><\/p>\n

A 100-year old institution that began as a national benchmark in the fields of Agronomy and Veterinary, UFRRJ is now distinguished by its diversity: it has developed into a school boasting a number of campuses and various subjects, broadening its teaching, research and extension activities to all areas of knowledge. Today, the Geography School of UFRRJ maintains a strong presence in the western region of the city of Rio de Janeiro known as Baixada Fluminense and, through its research, teaching and extension programs, has been playing a prominent role in understanding socio-environmental issues, social inclusion and regional development.<\/p>\n

UFRRJ is the primary Federal Public Institution of Higher Education to have a direct impact on around 7 million people living in these regions. The recent expansion of undergraduate and graduate courses was planned and has been expanded to offer teaching, research and extension opportunities to citizens living in these areas. Residents from this region often face tremendous obstacles when it comes to obtaining quality public services. In institutional and regional terms, the UFRRJ has cemented itself based on a core principle: to contribute to the internalization and decentralization of public higher education by providing undergraduate and graduate programs in an integrated manner and helping to make the university closer to the community that surrounds it.<\/p>\n

This Master\u2019s Degree in Geography is meant to be used as a tool for broadening the public sphere and the legitimate public rights of a democratic society. The on-screen program is an initiative that involves the geography courses at the Serop\u00e9dica (undergraduate and bachelor\u2019s degree) and Nova Igua\u00e7u (undergraduate degree) campuses. After their respective starts in 2009 and 2010, the academic staff from these courses decided to combine efforts by uniting research groups and topics and choosing common research areas in the interest of building a graduate program (Master\u2019s) in geography. The introduction of a Master\u2019s program in geography at UFRRJ is intended to enhance the expertise of the teaching staff, enrich exchanges between their research groups, work in conjunction with the Serop\u00e9dica and Nova Igua\u00e7u campuses and make it possible for undergraduate students and other people interested in obtaining the knowledge acquired in a Master\u2019s course to further expand their studies.<\/p>\n
