He holds a bachelor&#8217;s degree (1990) and a specialization (1992) in Mathematics from Universidade Federal Fluminense, a Master&#8217;s degree in Mathematical Education from Universidade Santa \u00darsula (1996), a PhD in Mathematical Education from the University of Barcelona (2002), and a Post-Doctorate in Mathematical Education from Rutgers University (Newark, USA, 2007) and the University of Turin (Italy, 2012). He has chaired the Gepem since 2003 and is the editor of the Gepem Bulletin. He is the founder (1999) and coordinator of the Group for Studies and Research on ICT in Mathematical Education (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gepeticem.ufrrj.br\/\">www.gepeticem.ufrrj.br<\/a>). He is an associate editor of the Journal of Research in Mathematics Education (REDIMAT). He has been a coordinator and faculty member of the Graduate Program in Education, Contemporary Contexts, and Popular Demands (PPGEDUC). He is also a professor in the Graduate Program in Education in Science and Mathematics (PPGEduCIMAT). His research in mathematics education focuses on the following topics: interactions in virtual environments, technologies and teacher training, mobile learning with touchscreen devices, and curricular innovations in geometry. He was the coordinator of GT19 (Mathematical Education) at ANPEd and a member of the coordination of GT6 (Mathematical Education, Digital Technologies, and Distance Education) at SBEM. Since July 2013, he has been a member of the International Commission for the Improvement of Mathematics Teaching and Learning (CIEAEM). He served as president of SBEM (Brazilian Society of Mathematical Education) from July 2019 to July 2022. He was the coordinator of thematic group-49 (Distance Learning, E-Learning, and Blended Learning of Mathematics) at ICME-14 (Shanghai, July 2021). The central question of Gepeticem is to identify and analyze the contributions of ICT to professional teacher development and mathematical learning (of students or teachers) in various learning contexts. In addition to the coordinator, Dr. Marcelo Almeida Bairral (<a href=\"mailto:mbairral@ufrrj.br\">mbairral@ufrrj.br<\/a>), the group was founded in October 1999 by Andr\u00e9 Luis Loureiro, Em\u00edlio Togashi, Felipe Sylvestre Ribeiro, and Renata Macedo. Institutionally, Gepeticem is linked to the Department of Theory and Planning of Teaching (DTPE) at the Institute of Education of UFRRJ. The group&#8217;s priority in undergraduate education is to welcome students from various fields (Mathematics, Computer Science, Pedagogy, etc.) interested in developing studies in mathematics education with ICT. In graduate education, Gepeticem conducts research in the research line &#8220;Contemporary Studies and Educational Practices,&#8221; within the PPGEduc (Graduate Program in Education, Contemporary Contexts, and Popular Demands), a program developed in partnership between the Institute of Education (Serop\u00e9dica campus) and the Multidisciplinary Institute (Nova Igua\u00e7u campus, UFRRJ). The group includes faculty, undergraduate students, graduate students, and teachers from elementary and high schools. Participation in the group depends on the number of available spots and the coordinator&#8217;s approval. The group&#8217;s research has received funding (scholarships and research grants) from various funding agencies (Capes, CNPq, Faperj, and MEC\/SESu), as well as funding and scholarships from UFRRJ. In some cases, scholarships are available for research projects. Since 2006, the group has developed collaborative research with the Department of Education at Rutgers University (USA) and Drexel University (Philadelphia, USA). In 2013, it began a partnership with the University of Turin (Italy) to work with touchscreen devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research Group Website: <a href=\"http:\/\/gepeticem.ufrrj.br\/\">http:\/\/gepeticem.ufrrj.br\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instagram: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gepeticem\/\">http:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gepeticem\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RESEARCH PROJECTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Building and Analyzing Educational Practices in Mathematical Education with Touchscreen Devices<\/strong><br>Period: (2022 \u2013 2025)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digital resources continue to grow and present challenges for educational research. The continuous development of mobile digital technologies fosters innovations in teaching practices and promotes reflections on the impacts caused by these changes. This project focuses on the use of touchscreen devices for teaching and learning processes. The research is being developed in three concurrent phases: (1) conducting a survey of touchscreen devices for mathematics education, (2) implementation and analysis of devices, and (3) analysis of epistemological, didactic, and cognitive implications. In phase 2, the following devices are being used: FreeGeo, GeoGebra app, Sketchometry, and Geometric Constructor. The subjects of the research include students (Brazilian and Italian) in Basic Education and future mathematics teachers from UFRRJ. We expect that the results of this investigation will serve as a starting point to assist teachers and researchers interested in integrating touchscreen devices into new educational practices. This project is a continuation of the postdoctoral research conducted by Dr. Marcelo Bairral and is developed in collaboration with researchers from the University of Turin (Italy), particularly Dr. Ferdinando Arzarello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Participating, Discovering, and Interacting in Virtual Environments: Enhancing New Forms of Mathematical Learning<\/strong><br>Period: (2020 \u2013 2024)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The systematic study of learning singularities in virtual environments (VEs) remains an ongoing challenge in Brazilian educational research. This investigation analyzes the mathematical learning of (future) teachers and students in virtual environments. It also focuses on the proposition, implementation, and categorization of a typology of activities that can be used in virtual learning environments (VLEs). VLEs such as Moodle, Gepeticem, and Virtual Math Team (VMT) will be used. The recent version of VMT includes GeoGebra (VMTcG) and also has an interface for use on mobile devices. The activities will primarily address geometry content, a topic rarely explored in mathematics classes. Data collection will involve instruments from both face-to-face and online (synchronous and asynchronous) interactions. This project builds on previous research and integrates a broader network of researchers from Rutgers University and Drexel University (USA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Online Educational Curriculum Materials (OECM): Design, Availability, and Learning Analysis<\/strong><br>Period: (2019 \u2013 2023)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This project consolidates a previous initiative aimed at designing Online Educational Curriculum Materials (OECM) for use by teachers who teach mathematics in their classrooms. The materials serve as support for the professional development of teachers and as a didactic resource for mathematics learning in Basic Education. In addition to improving teachers&#8217; knowledge allied to digital inclusion, the OECM will contribute to reflections on the importance of implementing practices with educational technology in formative processes. The OECM will also be used (1) as another strategy to motivate students and teachers in mathematical learning, and (2) as a tool for data collection, analysis, and the production of new studies in the educational field with technologies. In this phase of the project, we are using the OECM in formative practices and analyzing interactions on their interactive tabs.
