Si l?accent est mis sur le premier, Gorgias appara\u00eet comme un philosophe s?occupant du probl\u00e8me de l?\u00eatre et de la connaissance et donc atopique par rapport aux sophistes qui, auraient, dit-on, abandonn\u00e9 les recherches physiques pour se tourner vers l?homme. Si l?accent est mis sur les d\u00e9clamations, Gorgias cesse d?\u00eatre philosophe et peut \u00eatre rang\u00e9 dans le genre de la litt\u00e9rature et des th\u00e9ories litt\u00e9raires comme l?un des fondateurs de la rh\u00e9torique. De nouveau, atopique par rapport au portrait classique du sophiste de Platon. Isocrate accentue les difficult\u00e9s en pr\u00e9sentant l?H\u00e9l\u00e8ne comme relevant du s\u00e9rieux et le Sur le non-\u00eatre comme futile. Affronter le probl\u00e8me de la convergence entre la tradition \u00ab philosophique \u00bb et la tradition \u00ab rh\u00e9torique \u00bb requiert de d\u00e9gager d?abord la port\u00e9e philosophique des deux d\u00e9clamations. La communication s?attachera ce faisant \u00e0 d\u00e9finir \u00ab l?art de Gorgias \u00bb, pour montrer en quoi, entre philosophie et rh\u00e9torique, le choix n?est pas exclusif. Gorgias-philosophe ou Gorgias-rh\u00e9teur ? L?alternative ne vaut pas. Se o acento \u00e9 colocado sobre o primeiro, G\u00f3rgias aparece como um fil\u00f3sofo que se ocupa com o problema do ser e do conhecimento, quest\u00f5es at\u00f3picas em rela\u00e7\u00e3o aos sofistas que, teriam, diz-se, abandonado as pesquisas f\u00edsicas para se voltar para o homem. Se o acento \u00e9 colocado sobre as defesas, G\u00f3rgias deixa de ser um fil\u00f3sofo e pode ser classificado no g\u00eanero liter\u00e1rio e das teorias liter\u00e1rias como um dos fundadores da ret\u00f3rica. Novamente, at\u00f3pico em rela\u00e7\u00e3o ao perfil cl\u00e1ssico do sofista de Plat\u00e3o. Is\u00f3crates acentua as dificuldades ao apresentar o \u2018Elogia de Helena\u2019 como coisa s\u00e9ria e o \u2018Sobre o n\u00e3o-ser\u2019 como coisa f\u00fatil. Enfrentar o problema da converg\u00eancia entre a tradi\u00e7\u00e3o \u201cfilos\u00f3fica\u201d e a tradi\u00e7\u00e3o \u201cret\u00f3rica\u201d requer de in\u00edcio extrair o alcance filos\u00f3fico dos dois elogios. A comunica\u00e7\u00e3o se prestar\u00e1 a isto, mas n\u00e3o exclusivamente. G\u00f3rgias-fil\u00f3sofo ou G\u00f3rgias-retor? A alternativa n\u00e3o vale.
