HISTORIC

The Postgraduate Course in Veterinary Medicine – Pathology and Clinical Sciences (CPGMV), is located at the Veterinary Institute of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, in Seropedica, Rio de Janeiro. It was approved by the Research and Extension Teaching Council of UFRRJ in July 2005 and by the Scientific Technical Council of CAPES in September of the same year. On March 16, 2006, the Official Gazette of March 16, 2006, Section 1, page 09, was published in Administrative Rule no. 679, officially recognizing the Course.

As a new course, the CPGMV acts at the master’s level, seeking to fill a gap not contemplated by the UFRRJ graduate courses and the southeast region. It is proposed the program, integrate the clinical areas (medicine and surgery) with the basic ones, and in this way fill the deficiencies of professional qualification, with emphasis, by the characteristics of its faculty in pathophysiology of animal diseases.

The activities of the course were effectively started in March 2006, with the entry of the first class, consisting of 18 students. At present, due to the characteristics of the teaching staff involved, 38 students carry out research activities on topics related to ANIMAL PATHOLOGY AND CLINICAL SCIENCES, which have been demanding an increasing interest from the Veterinary Doctors seeking specific training.

For the implementation of the new course, we have 15 permanent professors, all with doctorates or equivalent, registered in the Directory of Research Groups (Plataforma Lattes – CNPq), in the areas of Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Clinic, Surgery, Animal Pathology and Veterinary Clinical Pathology, and teaching and research activities focused on the pathophysiological, clinical and laboratory aspects of the diseases that affect the companion, wild and production animals, aiming the diagnosis, control and treatment of diseases.Pathophysiological studies of diseases in the various specialties of Veterinary Medicine should contribute to the development of new diagnostic techniques, control and treatment of diseases. This approach is now shared by the group that promotes research in the CPGMV, made up of researchers with doctors with nationally and internationally recognized experience and researchers recently graduated doctors who seek in collaboration with the most renowned, to follow in their lines of research. All these actions gradually give an identity to the course, whose main mission is focused on the training of professionals focused on the interpretation of the causes and mechanisms of diseases. Introducing them to the idea of experimental and clinical models of disease is the strategy that has been adopted in order to create a critical posture regarding the causal mechanisms of disease, its control and prevention.Among the most experienced PPGMV researchers, five are CNPq productivity fellows, coordinators of agreements and cooperation with different higher education institution and research in Brazil and abroad. Of the young researchers, six have research support projects approved by FAPERJ and, in the general context, they were advisors of scientific initiation students from CNPq and FAPERJ, which demonstrates the quality of the projects and the dedication of these researchers. As a characteristic of the course, all researchers seek more effective interaction, through the confluence of ideas and shared use of equipment. The number of publications registered in recent years reveals a positive trend, maturation and competence of the faculty, thus meeting the basic principles established for the post-graduate courses evaluated by CAPES.In 2008, the Program completes its first biennium of activity, which is expected to consolidate the faculty and the qualification of 18 new research professors. The field of training of human resources, including extension activities represents another aspect of the course in which objectives we highlight the transfer of results to society.

It is the course’s strategy to ensure the convergence of different teams of researchers with associative capacity and that, in a mature and constantly evolving way, already work with well established clinical and experimental models in the study of pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular and nutritional diseases, endocrine, inflammatory, toxic and metabolic. Other lines of research promote the interaction between the teams and a continuous evolution, seeking in the near future to work also in the levels of Doctorate and also in the Post-Graduation Lato sensu.
