Cooperation Protocol between UFRRJ and the University of Porto in the field of Geography

Under the coordination of Prof. Leandro Dias de Oliveira [UFRRJ] and Prof. Maria Helena Mesquita Pina [U. PORTO], work on linking undergraduate and graduate courses in Geography at the University of Porto in an effort to foster the exchange of professors and researchers for holding conferences, seminars and workshops. It is also designed to jointly promote scientific events, as well as to participate in studies and training courses, post-doctorate and others. The project serving as the basis for this exchange is called “Spatial Restructuring and Regional Development: A Comparative Study between the Northern Region of Portugal and the State of Rio de Janeiro”.

The core objective is a comparative analysis between the state of Rio de Janeiro and the Northern Region of Portugal, which involves the collection of data and geo-economic and population information, a characterization of the investigated areas, conducting cartographic exercises and an understanding (in geographic science terms) of the two identified areas. The subfields of analysis include [1] Spatial planning and space economics in the Northern Region of Portugal and in the State of Rio de Janeiro; [2] An analysis of rural development, in its different scales and proposals; [3] Studies of population geography, as well as studies in the field of culture, in both areas; [4] Interpretation of the tourist phenomenon, in its different forms and propositions; [5] Characterization of physical aspects of both territorial areas; [6] Educational practices in the field of geography, through the understanding of experiences in teaching, education and citizenship, as well as encouraging environmental education; and, lastly, [7] Territorial Actions, social movements and Resistances in both situations under analysis. This research proposal is justified by: [1] representing an important object of interest to the geographer, as comparisons of this nature are important to get a better understanding of the reality experienced; [2] indicating an important panel of the limits, perspectives and potentials of the Fluminense (and Brazilian) reality, in relation to the Northern Region of Portugal; [3] understanding the proximity between the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Porto: the specialization/ productive clustering, tourism, culture, the economy, the port issue, as well as the interior of the state of Rio de Janeiro (and itself metropolitan fringe) and the rest of the Northern Region of Portugal: agricultural production methods, the importance of hydrography, rural tourism, environmental challenges, in addition to the proximity in the educational and scientific field; [4] bringing teachers together from both courses through a common research ideal, which not only consolidates the fields of research, but the collective effort to understand the reality of both parties; [5] strengthening working ties with the Portuguese academic community in the scientific field of geography, given that our common heritage (the Portuguese language) allows for a wide range of ideas found throughout the community of both courses; and finally, [6] expanding the possibilities of teacher and student training for both institutions in terms of investigative skills concerning methods and techniques in the field of geography from the approach of the referred studies.
